I seek ways to transform the materials I work with into something that no longer feels like ordinary matter. I want my work to be luminous, weightless and unbounded.

Paul Friedlander, in Physics World, 2011

Paul was born in 1951 and is the son of a mathematician at the University of Cambridge and an abstract artist. A self-professed child of the space age, he remembers watching Sputnik being launched on TV when he was 6 and being fascinated with science from a young age. When studying physics and mathematics at Sussex university, Paul attended a kinetic sculpture show which changed the course of his life: he had found his calling.

Paul considers art as an experimental process- indeed, often, when creating his sculptures, he finds himself inadvertently making scientific developments as well. Continuing on from childhoof fantasies of exploring space, Paul is still driven by a search for the mysterious. To date, his work has been shown in four continents and fifteen countries.
